Style is what separates the average speaker or writer from those who really stand out! Having style, which includes good technique, means speaking and writing with confidence in your second language. It includes a keen appreciation of word choice (diction), but is much more than that.
Reaching bands 8 or 9 in vocabulary (lexis) requires a sense of style. Traditionally, style has been called rhetoric. Also see this history of rhetoric website and literary devices, which notes that rhetoric is “a tool for writers and orators which empowers them to convince their readers and listeners about their point of view.“
